Academic Advising & Planning
Students in the TRIO Student Support Services program will receive personal academic advising and planning. Our coaches will meet with you one-on-one to discuss your career and life goals and develop a plan for your academic program, graduation, and/or transfer.
Career Exploration
Our philosophy in the TRIO program is that if you know your career track and your goals, you will be more successful in your program of studies. However, if you do not know, we have the expertise to assist you in finding a career that is a good match for your personality and talents. We will be happy to help you in determining the correct path for you.
Priority Tutoring
Tutoring is available to all students at Virginia Western. However, students in the TRIO program receive priority tutoring. They also are eligible to receive additional tutoring services, not available to all students.
Short-Term Personal Counseling
Often during an academic year, many students are faced with personal concerns that may interfere with their continued success here at Virginia Western We can assist you with issues that may include: grief counseling, identity issues, family concerns, situational depression, stress management, anxiety concerns, etc. Please contact your assigned coach to begin working on these concerns as soon as you notice them
Transfer Assistance
Transferring is a process, not a single act of enrolling in a four-year college or university. There are many factors involved in choosing a transfer institution: location, campus personality, majors offered, academic reputation, selectivity, and cost. Start meeting with the Transfer Specialist in TRIO early to discuss your transfer options and narrow down your choice of schools. The courses you take at Virginia Western will depend on your transfer plans. Plan to apply to least three schools; be aware of deadlines. Work with the Transfer Specialist to polish your applications, write personal statements, and apply for Financial Aid. Prepare yourself mentally for the transition from Virginia Western to your new school by learning how to combat “transfer shock”. The confidence of knowing you’ve made informed decisions will move you steadily toward your Bachelor’s degree.
Workshops
Throughout the academic year, TRIO staff will offer workshops on academic skill building, time management, study skills, social skills, etc. to meet the needs of today’s students. These topics may also be continued or worked on separately with your TRIO coach. Please contact our main office at 857-7289 to learn when workshops are being offered.
