
The State Board for Community Colleges has certified three finalists for the position of president at Virginia Western Community College, to succeed Dr. Robert Sandel, who is retiring at the end of June after leading Virginia Western since 2001.
The finalists, in alphabetical order, are Dr. Daryl Minus of South Hill, Virginia, Dr. Jamonica Rolle of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Dr. Laura Treanor of Vincennes, Indiana.

They were among 61 applicants from across the nation who were considered for the Virginia Western post.
“Virginia Western Community College was one of the first colleges in our system and it plays a pivotal role in supporting the people and economy of its region. I am confident that this group of finalists will yield a president who will lead the college successfully in its next era of service,” said Dr. David Doré, Chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges.
The finalists seek to become the fifth permanent president at Virginia Western Community College. Arrangements are being made for each of the finalists to visit the college soon to meet with faculty, staff, students and community members.
About the finalists:
Dr. Daryl L. Minus currently serves as Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), Alberta, Virginia, a post he has held since August 2020. Prior to that, he was Education Assistance Branch Manager/Education Services Officer (ESO), U.S. Marine Corps Community Services in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Vice President, Student Services and Enrollment Management, Cape Fear Community College, Vice President and Executive Vice President for Learning and Student Success, Craven Community College, Dean of Student Services, Tidewater Community College, Dean of Counseling, Chabot College, and Dean, Learning Support Services, Bakersfield College. Dr. Minus also was an adjunct faculty member at Craven Community College and University of Maryland.
Dr. Minus earned a B.A. at Hampton University, a Master’s Degree at New York University, and a Doctor of Education degree at University of Phoenix.
Dr. Jamonica Rolle currently serves as College Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and College Operations (Interim) at Broward College, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a post she has held since July 2024. Her additional posts at Broward College include Vice Provost of Academic Affairs and North Campus, Dean of Academic Affairs Communication Pathway & North/South Campus, and Associate Dean of Communication & Fine Arts. Dr. Rolle’s teaching experience includes Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at Broward College, Graduate Business Communication Instructor at Florida Atlantic University, and Florida Certified English Teacher, Grades 9-12 at Broward County Public Schools.
Dr. Rolle earned a B.A. and a Master’s Degree at Florida Atlantic University, and a Doctor of Education Degree at the University of Florida.
Dr. Laura Treanor currently serves as Provost, Senior Vice President for Instructional Services, Dean of Faculty at Vincennes University, Vincennes, Indiana, a post she has held since 2018. Previously, at Baker College in Flint, Michigan, Dr. Treanor served as System Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness, Vice President for Academics, and Vice President for Academics/Chief Academic Officer, and Dean of General Education. She has faculty experience as Associate Professor at Roanoke College, Assistant Professor at West Virginia University and Associate Professor at Barton College.
Dr. Treanor earned her Bachelor’s degree at Virginia Tech, a Master’s Degree at the Ohio State University, and a Doctor of Education Degree at Virginia Tech.
Virginia Western is planning to host candidates on campus the week of April 7 – 11. A series of forums will be held during each candidate’s campus visit. During these forums, the candidates will share information about themselves, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Finalists are invited to campus:
- Tuesday, April 8 – Dr. Jamonica Rolle
- Thursday, April 10 – Dr. Daryl Minus
- Friday, April 11 – Dr. Laura Treanor
On each of these days, a forum for Community Members (open to all) will be held 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Whitman Auditorium.
