Virginia Western Community College and Junior Achievement (JA) are collaborating to offer a summer camp designed to show students, ages 11-15, how they can positively influence the Roanoke Valley. “Kid Entrepreneurs Change Our Valley” is a summer opportunity for students to have a positive impact in their communities.
Students will look at current community needs, create an innovative solution for a service or product and take it from paper to fruition. JA president Katherin Elam said, “There are so many talented children in our midst with great energy and ideas and with the encouragement of local entrepreneurs a prototype can be generated that leads to a business.”
JA has sixty years of teaching young people how business works and will provide the framework for this weeklong experience. The tradition of JA has been the use of business people as the advisors in creating student run enterprises this will hold true for Kid Entrepreneurs Change Our Valley. Already throughout Virginia, we have kid entrepreneurs with thriving online businesses and products on retail shelves. Roanoke youth can be next with a service or product that will improve the quality of life in the region.
