Virginia Western Community College announces an exciting new partnership with Star Flight Training to offer pilot training beginning this summer. The first class offered will be a 12-week ground school program that starts on July 26. The course cost is $379 and by the end, students will be prepared to take the FAA written exam.
The ground school training will teach students the fundamental knowledge they need for the flight portion of training. Flight training comprises the practical training and can be done concurrently with ground school. Completion of flight training qualifies the student to take the practical test, leading to issuance of the respective FAA license. Once they have earned a private pilot license, students will have the opportunity to continue taking classes in pursuit of a commercial pilot’s license.

Boeing’s annual pilot and technician outlook estimates a need for 90,000-plus new airline pilots in the U.S. over the next 20 years. Most airline pilots earn $32,000-42,000 in their first year and because advancement potential is so strong, many pilots earn $165,000 in their fifth year. Top pay at major airlines exceeds $350,000 annually.
“We have the highest demand for airline pilots at any time in the past 60 years,” said Travis Profit, senior flight instructor at Star Flight Training. “It’s easier than ever to get a foot in the door with an airline and advancement is happening quicker than we’ve ever seen.”
