Virginia Western Community College announces that it will host its first Boots2Books 5k race beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. The race was conceived and developed by members of the Virginia Western Armed Forces Student Association and it will benefit the Virginia Western Educational Foundation’s Veterans Assistance Fund.
“Despite the supports and funding available to veterans as they return to college and prepare for the workforce, many still find themselves needing help,” said Matthew Jones, president of the Armed Forces Association. “As a veteran myself, I knew I wanted to do something about it. The support of Virginia Western and community partners to make this race a reality has been amazing.”
Participants can find details about pre-race registration online or through the mail prior to Aug. 15 at www.virginiawestern.edu/community/boots2books.php. The pre-race registration fees are: general public runner, $30; VCCS student or employee, $20; Veteran or active military, $15; walker, $10. Runners can register the day of the race for $35.
The certified 5k race course will begin on Virginia Western’s campus and feature challenging climbs through the adjoining Jefferson Hills neighborhood before finishing back at the college. Post-race refreshments and entertainment will be available at the finish.
The Veterans Assistance Fund is an emergency fund for military and veteran students to provide financial support to cover the cost of books, emergency educational expenses or other financial needs in the case of a life-changing event and to support the mission of the Armed Forces Student Association.
