Brown Library and Student Activities invite you to come express yourself at our Jazz Poetry Hour this Wednesday, March 31st, at 1pm in the Student Commons.
The Elmer Coles Quintet will play behind you as you share your spoken-word, poetry, or other *short* forms of writing based on themes from the Big Read book, A Lesson Before Dying. (Pieces should be five minutes or less each.) Even if you didn’t get a chance to read the book yet, you can still participate! Here are the themes we encourage you to incorporate in your performance:
- Justice and injustice
- God and religion
- Civil rights and racism
- Capital punishment
- Facing responsibility
- Redemption in death
And if you’re not a writer yourself, feel free to just listen or share something that moves you that someone else has written. Come on out and relax, soak up the funky jazz, and have some open-mic fun!
This event is being held in conjunction with the Big Read Roanoke Valley.
