Three Cups of Tea

I am in a book club at the Yoga Center on Franklin Road. We’re currently reading Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. It’s about Greg Mortenson, a man who tries to climb K2 and fails. He gets lost, and the people of Korphe, a high mountain village, take him in and nurse him back to health. In return, he promises to build them a school. After a succession of challenges greater than any he has ever encountered in mountain climbing,  the children of Korphe get their school for the amazingly low cost of $12,000. Mortenson goes on to build schools all over Pakistan.

This is a powerful testament to the ability of one small person to make a big difference. If you’re interested in the people and culture of Pakistan and India or interested in reading about remote, wild places, this book will fascinate you. If you’re interested in community development or just want to find a way to help others, then this book will surely inspire you. ——Laura Milliman, Reference Librarian
