Library Tip of the Day #5

TIP #5 – You can get research help 24/7 through LRC Live Reference Service:

LRC Live is a great service for online research and search strategy assistance.  This service enables you and a library reference staff member to chat online and share online content in real-time, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week!  So, if you wake up in the middle of the night and need to chat with a librarian (it could happen), someone will be available to assist you.  Read more about LRC Live: http://virginiawestern.edu/library/askalibrarian/index.php

It’s National Library Week! Brown Library has a few things cooked up in order to celebrate.

  • Six Word Memoirs: Write your life in six words, and be eligible to win a “Writer’s Gift Basket!” Examples can be found here: Six-Word Memoirs: Life Stories Distilled on NPR. Enter to win online, or pick up a paper entry form in the library (one student and one faculty/staff winner).
  • Library Find-a-Word, main floor
  • Special Displays on the Writing Life, top floor
  • Library Tip of the Day, direct to you by email!

We’ll also have a table at Spring Fling on Friday, April 20th, where you’ll be able to create your own Newspaper Poems as well!

Library Tip of the Day #4

TIP #4 – Help is always available for you in the library:

The library has friendly, knowledgeable staff members who are happy to help you in person and by phone.  Feel free to go up to our Reference Desk on the main floor and our Circulation Desk on the top floor to get help with your research needs or to get general college information.  If we don’t know the answer, we will keep looking until we find it.  Hey, it’s what we do.

Library Tip of the Day #3

TIP #3 – If we don’t have the item you need, we can request it from another library that owns it (Librarians are good at sharing):

Our Interlibrary Loan service allows you to obtain books, journal articles and other materials that are not available in Brown Library.  Student requests are honored for materials needed to fulfill the reading and research requirements of the College’s course offerings.  Faculty and staff requests are honored for materials used for work-related inquiry or to support the mission of the college.  Get more information here: http://virginiawestern.edu/library/ill/index.php

Library Tip of the Day #2

TIP #2 – You can access the library’s databases from home:

Our library databases contain thousands of newspaper, magazine, and journal articles (Information that you can trust!).  You can access this information while using a computer in the library or in another location on campus.  You can also access this information from home by entering your user name and password — the same user name and password that you use for My VWCC.  Check out the databases that are available to you: http://virginiawestern.edu/library/databases.php

Library Tip of the Day

TIP #1 – We stay open longer than usual on the last three Saturdays of the Fall and Spring semesters:

Have too many distractions at home?  Need a quiet place to study for your exams?  The library is open Saturday, April 14, 21, and 28 from 9:00 to 4:00.  We’re also open Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Come on in, but don’t make us “SHUSH” you.
