Voltaire’s 250-Year-Old Book Stands the Test of Time

Due to the acts of terrorism occurring throughout the world, especially the recent shootings of journalists in Paris, Voltaire’s 1763 book, “A Treatise on Tolerance,” has climbed the French best seller list, according to a January 28th, Associated Press report on the U.S. News & World Report website. Amazon is among the sellers offering the book.

An excerpt from the book:

“WHAT is tolerance? it is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other’s folly–that is the first law of nature.” Source: The Philosophical Dictionary, scanned by the Hanover College Department of History in 1995.
