MOAT is gone but …

What is it?

A new Cyber Security Awareness program will be rolled out to VWCC faculty and staff in a few days to counter the increasing threats to our institutions, faculty, staff, and students. We are partnering with Global Learning Systems, a leader in cybersecurity development, to bring cutting-edge security training to every VWCC employee.

What does it mean to you?

This program will feature continuous learning designed to help you identify and avoid threats like phishing, ransomware, and other attacks that lead to identity theft, compromised accounts, and loss of privileged information. We hope that by being aware of these threats we can be vigilant in our daily interactions and minimize the chances of a VWCC security breach.

What do I need to do?

Our training web site is at  If your MOAT renewal is due in October or November, you will soon receive a preliminary email from with your account information and signup details to the new program. These emails are legitimate and are not phishing emails! Please go to for details on the program, a sample email and a link to screen shots and help information.

WiFi Network Change

Why can’t I get on the WiFi?

Certificate Authority is changing!

What is it?

The college Wi-Fi network verifies all devices connecting to the network by ensuring they have a valid certificate issued by a “certificate authority” running on a special server on campus. Certificates stored on the devices enable secure communications and verify connection to resources, preventing the “bad guys” from stealing your data.

What does this mean to me?

Wireless access will be affected! Phones, tablets and personally owned laptops will not connect until the existing certificates are replaced with new ones issued by the new certificate authority. You can update the certificate by following the same steps you took when you first started using your device(s) on our network. Updated instructions are available at and as always, you can contact the Help Desk (540-857-7354) for assistance.

When will this happen?

The cut-over is scheduled for 12 noon on Tuesday, August 8th.

IET Password Reset Portal (yes, there’s an app for that!)

What is it?

Have you ever been locked out of your VWCC email or your work computer because you typed in the wrong password too many times? Has this happened when you are out of town or during a holiday break when you can’t call the Help Desk to reset it? Don’t worry – help is on the way!  IET has launched a new web portal, which will let you reset your expired VWCC email password or unlock your VWCC email account without having to call anyone.

What does it mean to you?

You can now reset your VWCC email password (which will also reset your VWCC desktop/laptop computer password) using the new Password Reset Portal on the web or the matching iOS or Android app.  All you have to do is to enroll before your password expires at the portal by entering the responses to two predefined security questions of your choice.  Once you are registered, you can change your password or unlock your account on your own without having to call the Help Desk.

Enrollment is quick and easy, do it now!  Go to for details and the link to the portal.  If you haven’t registered by next Monday you will get an email with instructions.

Call or email the Help Desk if you have any questions.

Network Outage December 26-27

What is it?

The college’s core network switches will be upgraded during the Christmas break.  We expect a network outage starting 10 AM  December 26th continuing through 11 AM December 27th.  There will be additional outages for brief periods through the week as individual items are tested, updated and upgraded.

What does it mean to me?

During the outage noted above, no Internet, computer or phone services will be available from locations on campus. If you are off-campus, all VCCS Enterprise services normally available through MyVWCC will be available.  Some services on campus may be sporadically available during the break as the different components are tested and tuned.

Why is this needed?

IET is working on a major infrastructure upgrade of the VWCC network infrastructure over the December holiday break. During these major upgrades, service interruptions are unavoidable. Please plan accordingly and enjoy the holiday.
