Physical Location: The Roanoke Public Library at 706 S. Jefferson Street SE, Roanoke, VA. (Although the employer of this position is Virginia Western Community College at 3094 Colonial Ave, Roanoke, VA, the job duties are performed at the library in downtown Roanoke.)
Description
The Roanoke Public Libraries enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of the community by creating a climate of lifelong learning and community enrichment. The Roanoke Public Library Assistant provides support to library patrons who are served through the Youth Services and Public Services Departments of the library. The following tasks describe how the Library Assistant contributes to these objectives. The Assistant will:
- Lead literacy-based programs during our daily Feed and Read program at the Main Library – includes reading to preschool and elementary school children and providing them a meal
- Prepare Star City Reads books for distribution to help support the library’s commitment to the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading
- Help children enroll with the library and obtain their first library card to access books and materials
- Help plan and carry out library projects and literacy support events
- Help library staff with collection development, choosing books that help support vocabulary and reading proficiency for ages K-12
- Assist library users who need instruction in basic computer literacy skills
- Assist library staff at outreach events such as parent nights at local schools, tabling at fairs and festivals and presentations for local civic groups
- Assist library staff with programs for children, teens and adults
- Assist library users in using the e-library public access terminals land locating library materials
- Set up and take down furniture and equipment for library events
- Design program posters and book displays
- Sort, process and shelve new or returned books and DVDs
- Assist library staff with clerical functions – making photocopies, filing, creating fliers, signs, etc.
- Cover desk when staff members are away
General Qualifications
- Must like to work with people of all backgrounds and experiences
- Must be customer service oriented
- Must have some computer skills
- Preferred (not required) skill – data base and graphic design experience
