This position serves as the chief student affairs officer, providing leadership and direction for all student affairs programs and is a member of the President’s executive team. Oversees, assesses the effectiveness of, and strategically enhances student recruitment, enrollment and onboarding processes, financial aid, student records, advising services, student activities, retention services, disabilities services, behavioral health services, career services, and the TRiO Student Support Services grant program for both credit and non-credit programs. Addresses student disciplinary matters, Title IX complaints, and serves as a member of the threat assessment/CARE Team. The VP of Student Affairs leads and engages in strategic planning and promotes creative ideas that enable the Student Affairs division and the college to be more productive, efficient, and continuously improve services. Ensures a one-door approach that focuses on students receiving assistance and guidance navigating all of the college’s educational offerings (e.g., credit courses, non-credit courses, degree programs, certificate programs, career training, etc.) to best meet their academic and career goals. Develops and implements practices to ensure equitable college access and inclusive student success resources for underrepresented, underserved, and non-traditional/adult learners. This position ultimately ensures the success of academic and non-academic programs by monitoring and responding to student needs.
NOTE: This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.” A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the Virginia Western Police Department who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority.
Work Tasks & Duties
30% | Operations and Personnel Management Leads, directs and manages Student Affairs operations including student onboarding and enrollment, retention programs, student records, financial aid, non-academic student support services, intervention services (i.e., counseling and disability services), the federal TRIO Pathways grant program, career services, and student activities. Plans, develops, and administers budgets for these programs. Evaluates and manages employee performance, schedules, and work activities. Approves leave requests and takes corrective action as appropriate in employee matters. Develops processes and allocates personnel and other resources to most efficiently and effectively meet student and operational needs. Oversees several technology platforms within the Student Affairs division. Supervises the coordination of student onboarding to ensure an efficient and effective process of enrolling and advising students into the college in both credit and non-credit courses through a “one-door” approach. |
25% | Strategic Planning Participates in developing and implementing the college’s strategic plan, particularly in areas related to recruitment, enrollment, retention, curricular change, and student success. Remains current on external and internal challenges affecting these functional areas. Uses that knowledge to establish clear and measurable strategic goals along with viable plans to achieve those goals. Promulgates those plans throughout the college. Forms internal and external partnerships across the institution to achieve those goals. Creates and executes strategic plans that are in alignment with the college’s overarching mission and strategic plan, as well as VCCS goals and initiatives. |
15% | Program Assessment In partnership with Institutional Effectiveness and other stakeholders, sets up a real-time dashboard using quantitative and qualitive data to highlight the effectiveness of each function in Student Affairs. Sets operational goals, tracks progress toward those goals, and uses data to inform strategies, staffing needs, equipment purchases, facility needs, and other services necessary to conduct program activities. |
10% | Executive Team Participation Serves as a member of the President’s Executive Team. Researches and drafts reports for submission to the President, VCCS, or other authorities as needed. Serves on college committees as assigned. |
10% | Internal and External Collaboration Works in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic and Workforce Services (VP AWS) on policies, procedures, and interactions between academic, workforce, and student affairs functions. Attends VP AWAs weekly meetings. Maintains effective working relationships with others throughout the college and the VCCS. Where appropriate, develops and maintains partnerships with business, government agencies, high schools, other community colleges, and universities to facilitate the planning and delivery of education and student services. |
10% | Student Discipline and Grievances Coordinates/oversees the student disciplinary process, including compliance issues for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title IX to ensure that the college’s programs and offerings are meeting the requirements of the law. Serves as a member of the Threat/CARE Assessment Team. Coordinates/Oversees the grievance process for both direct grievances and indirect grievances that fall in other areas of the college. Interprets and implements state and local polices relating to academic and student services. |
