The Access Services Librarian develops and provides services that connect library users to library resources. The position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the library circulation desk and related functions including oversight of the library’s physical collection and spaces. The access services librarian is also responsible for ensuring/providing access to the library’s electronic resources and technology systems. The position also oversees initial cataloging, processing and ongoing maintenance of library materials. In addition, this position collects and reports on the usage of library resources of all types, physical and electronic, and performs other special projects as assigned.
Work Tasks & Duties
Circulation Desk Operations Management (40%)
Oversees day-to-day operations of all circulation desk functions including course reserves, interlibrary loan services, library technology and spaces during daytime, evening, and some Saturday hours as required. Trains and supervises the full-time Circulation Manager and part-time Circulation Assistant. Determines the Circulation Desk coverage schedule and assigns projects as needed. Shares in staffing the Circulation Desk in conjunction with the other librarians and staff members. Oversees the library spaces including the physical collection, the study areas, and in-library course support materials. Manages the loaner laptop program, working closely with the Information and Educational Technology department to ensure laptops are in good working order and updated in a timely manner.
Supporting Access to E-Resources and Library Systems (30%)
Responsible for the setup, management and troubleshooting of e-resources e.g., online databases and eBook collections. Assists faculty and students with troubleshooting access issues, especially those learning and teaching online, at offsite locations, and in area high schools through dual enrollment. Manages the library’s student-facing technology, including the library management system that serves as the library catalog and the circulation system. Monitors the system for upgrades, resolves problems, and helps plan for future service expansion and implementation. Works collaboratively with the VCCS Systems Office to resolve access and system issues.
Technical Services and Processing (20%)
Supervises and participates in the cataloging of new books, course reserves, and other materials by capturing and editing MARC records according to professional guidelines and local practices for copy cataloging. Performs catalog maintenance tasks for the OPAC. Oversees the physical end processing or technical services work performed on all library materials. Assists in collection development and budget planning related to print and e-resources acquisitions, cataloging, and materials processing and monitors expenditures.
Data Collection and Reporting (5%)
Collects and reports statistical data related to collection use and service desk transactions, develops processes for collecting usage statistics for e-resources, and assists with data reporting to the VCCS Systems Office and the college’s Institutional Effectiveness Office.
Collaboration and Special Projects (5%)
Participates in college committees and special projects. Upholds the policies of the college and the VCCS. Collaborates effectively with the academic schools, Student Services, and other non-academic departments. Serves as a liaison to assigned schools of the college. Collaborates with the Coordinator of Library Services and other Learning Resources employees to implement or participate in events to encourage library and academic support services use. Supports agency and departmental strategic objectives. Participates in library, college, consortium, and regional/national professional development activities as appropriate.
