Work Tasks & Duties
30% | Plans, directs and manages the cataloging, classification and processing of library materials for circulation, reference, reserves, and special collections. Supervises and participates in the cataloging of new books and other materials by capturing and editing MARC records according to professional guidelines and local practices for original or copy cataloging. Preserves the integrity of the catalog by performing database maintenance tasks. Plans and manages inventories and shelf maintenance tasks. Manages overdues. Oversees the physical (end) processing or technical services work performed on all library materials for circulation, reference, and reserves. Continually assesses processes to streamline tasks, reduce redundancies and track material processing from acquisition to user access. Assists in budget planning and preparation related to acquisitions, cataloging, and materials processing and monitors expenditures. Regularly views VCCS library listserv (Lincsite) for information regarding cataloging and responds accordingly. Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting all library departments by reading professional literature and participating in professional development activities. |
20% | Trains and supervises two part-time employees and student workers. Determines work schedules, assigns work to employees, and manages day-to-day supervisory tasks. |
15% | Serves as administrator for “ALEPH,” Brown Library’s library management system provided by the VCCS. Monitors the system for upgrades, resolves problems, and helps plan for future service expansion and implementation. Produces ALEPH reports as needed. Regularly views VCCS library listserv (Lincsite) for information regarding ALEPH and responds accordingly. |
15% | Collaborates with library staff and other college staff to create and implement educational events which encourage student involvement. Plans and implements library tours and the library’s participation in Discover Orientation, Spring Fling, In-Service, etc. Manages LibGuides and uses them to market library resources and services. Develops and produces communication that conveys the value of library resources and services. Oversees the maintenance of the library’s web site and submits updates. Monitors ALA and Chronicle e-newsletter and shares relevant information with faculty, staff, and administrators. Creates timely displays featuring library resources. |
10% | Works at public service desks (Reference and Circulation) as needed, including some weekend and evening hours. Answers reference queries and helps students with their research needs. Assists students using the library’s computers. Helps students locate, check out, and return items in the circulating and reserve collections. Provides study room entry and performs other routine tasks at service desks and on library’s top floor. |
5% | Prepares and submits the annual Business Impact/Risk Analysis (BIA) report to IETS regarding the library’s technical processes. Prepares and submits the annual VCCS Library Questionnaire regarding Brown Library’s book collection. |
5% | Participates in college committees and special projects. Upholds the policies of the college and the VCCS. Collaborates effectively with the academic schools, with Student Services, and other non-academic departments. Serves as a liaison to specific Schools of the college. Supports agency and departmental strategic objectives. |
