Work Tasks & Duties
35% | Oversees the daily operations of the Reference Department by initiating, promoting, and providing a full range of responsive, high-quality reference services to individuals and groups. Maintains a library environment that is conducive to productive student learning. Directs students to specific informational sources and assists students and other patrons in the use of the Internet, online databases, the catalog and the collection. Discusses informational needs with students, helps them define research topics, and guides them on matters such as research strategy and bibliographic format. Assists students and faculty/staff with questions and problems regarding access to online services. In conjunction with other librarians and library staff, assesses services and procedures for revision as needed and recommends the implementation of new technologies to enhance services. Serves as a liaison to specific schools of the college. Works some weekend and evening hours and is cross-trained to support public services throughout the library building. |
30% | Plans, implements, markets, and evaluates the library’s instructional program. Coordinates and schedules all library instruction activities and responds to all general inquiries for library instruction. Teaches classes and provides workshops in library use and research techniques to students enrolled in all programs, including off-site dual-enrollment and online programs. Collaborates with other librarians and works individually to produce a variety of informational and instructional materials to assist library users in successfully using library resources. Creates, shares, and assesses online learning modules in the Learning Management System (LMS) for information literacy skills. In collaboration with administration and other librarians, will develop, implement, advocate, promote, document, integrate and assess information literacy initiatives. Works collegially with instructors to create course assignments that relate to library resources and information literacy outcomes. Creates successful liaison and outreach relationships by providing professional development workshops for faculty, highlighting the library’s services and resources. Manages online research guides (LibGuides) and uses them to market college resources and services. Manages the classroom laptop cart. Remains current with changing information-delivery systems and recommends the implementation of new technologies to enhance library instruction. Maintains statistics on library instruction and creates reports as needed. |
15% | Supervises the part-time Writing & Research Specialist (position W0198) and 3-5 part-time Writing & Research Consultants. Supports the management and leadership of the Writing & Research Center operations and staff. Assists the Tutoring & Testing Coordinator in configuring the Student Success Management System, plans academic support interventions, and trains staff in the use and management of the system. Trains and supervises part-time Writing & Research Consultants in the reference interview, basic information sources, and the referral model. Collaboratively establishes projects and resource priorities and performs other necessary supervisory tasks. |
10% | Works collaboratively with other librarians, library staff, and with the Coordinator of Library Services to prepare, submit, and evaluate the library’s annual Institutional Effectiveness report. Maintains accurate statistics for all Reference & Instruction services. Assists fellow librarians with the collection development process, which includes recommending book purchases and weeding outdated resources. |
5% | Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting all library departments by reading professional literature and participating in professional development activities. |
5% | Participates in college committees and special projects. Upholds the policies of the college and the VCCS. Collaborates effectively with the academic schools, with Student Services, and other non-academic departments. Supports agency and departmental strategic objectives. |
