Reports to: VP of Institutional Advancement/Dean of Nursing (FA095)
Under the supervision of the VP of Institutional Advancement/Dean of Nursing the Nursing Program Officer will be responsible for overall leadership, development, direction, and administration of all aspects of the nursing program and other programs if applicable, for ensuring that the program is in compliance with all laws and regulations of the Virginia Board of Nursing and standards and criteria of accrediting agencies, and for coordinating the nursing curriculum with other degree program requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Supervision & Management (75%)
Program Supervision and Management (e.g. budget, policies, procedures, curriculum development, program evaluation, program administration and maintenance, etc.)
- Maintains knowledge and currency regarding the program and the policies and procedures of the program. With faculty input, and in collaboration with the Dean, develops and documents all program policies and procedures. Monitors implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency and effectiveness. Re-examines and modifies as necessary.
- Responsible for planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating all aspects of the nursing program.
- With faculty input, develops, implements, and monitors department budget.
- Pursues other funding sources such as grants through collaboration with the Grants Office.
- Attends meetings for VCCS Nursing programs and VBON meetings, and other assigned meetings as the department representative.
- Ensures the systematic plan of evaluation (SPE) is maintained with the appropriate frequency of assessment and takes the appropriate action for the development, maintenance, and revision of the program and ensures ongoing documentation demonstrating program compliance with ACEN standards and criteria.
Collaboration
- Collaborates with other nursing or related healthcare pathways programs to develop, support, and coordinate skills training and career pathway programs to prepare students for healthcare employment, transfer credit, and lifelong learning.
Accreditation Management & Compliance
- Communicates, reports, and interprets program requirements, objectives, VBON regulations and accreditation standards to college administration and other departments.
- Maintains data necessary to support evidence-based nursing education practices. Submits annual reports required for continued VBON approval and accreditation.
- Coordinates and leads the faculty through creation of self-study report as required for maintenance of VBON approval and accreditation.
Student Management (e.g. clinical rotations, assignments, handbook, monitors performance, maintains records)
- Plans, manages and evaluates program admissions, recruitment, advanced placement, and outreach.
- Ensures the maintenance of student records following VBON, VCCS, VWCC and accreditation policies and guidelines.
- Maintains a record of student complaints and grievances ensuring students receive due process and resolution.
- Monitors nursing student progression and graduation requirements.
- Maintains and updates AAS Nursing Student Handbook ensuring accurate and up-to-date content of program policies and procedures. Ensures consistency between AAS Nursing Student Handbook, course syllabi, VBON regulations and accreditation standards.
- Ensures students have representation in governance activities of the nursing unit.
Personnel Management (e.g. interviewing, hiring, assists with credentialing, FT orientation and mentoring, committees, meeting chair, evaluation, etc.)
- Supervises the Nursing Support Specialist. Approves time worked, evaluates performance and provides direction and guidance. Ensures duties best support the nursing program and collaborative pathway programs. Ensures tasks are completed accurately and timely.
- Maintains current full and part time faculty rosters.
- Screens, interviews, and recommends full and part time candidates for hire with input from clinical coordinators and faculty hiring committees.
- Ensures that all recommended candidates meet VBON and accreditation credentialing standards.
- Submits faculty appointments, resignations, and terminations per VCCS policy.
- Approves faculty and staff timesheets, exceptions and leave requests per VCCS policy.
- Coordinates mentoring of new faculty and staff and maintains documentation in personnel files.
- Coordinates all departmental faculty committees and nursing advisory committees.
- Chairs nursing faculty meetings and committees.
- Collaborates with the Dean to plan faculty workload assignments.
- Evaluates full and part time faculty according to VCCS policy.
- Creates a culture of trust and inclusion within the nursing faculty team.
- Models professionalism through a shared governance model.
- Models Virginia Western’s core values and inspires faculty members to do the same.
Clinical Management (e.g. contracts, visits, ect.)
- Oversees Clinical Manager/ Coordinators in the planning, development, and approval of student assignments, including a variety of clinical experiences across the lifespan that meet VBON regulations and accreditation standards.
- Initiates clinical affiliate agreements (CAAs) and contract negotiations in collaboration with the VP of Finance and Administration.
- Maintains current clinical contracts per VBON regulations and monitors contract compliance through annual reviews.
- Makes periodic visits to clinical facilities for clinical curriculum oversite and faculty evaluation.
Community Relations
- Collaborates with agency personnel and healthcare professionals to promote positive community relations.
- Ensures public information (print and electronic) is accurate, clear, consistent and accessible, including VBON and accreditation status.
- Serves as the nursing liaison for the development of nursing program articulation agreements.
Curriculum Development, Evaluation and Revisions (25%)
- Responsible for curriculum implementation, and oversees revisions to the common curriculum in conjunction with program faculty.
- Ensures the common curriculum is faculty-developed, contemporary, incorporates professional nursing standards and guidelines and has clearly articulated end-of-program SLOs that organize and guide the delivery of instruction.
- Guides faculty to develop, evaluate and revise the common curriculum per VCCS policy to ensure maintenance of VBON regulations and accreditation standards.
- Prepares documentation for curriculum reports and catalog changes.
- Ensures the curriculum is regularly reviewed by faculty to ensure integrity, rigor and currency.
