To unlock the full potential of credit for prior learning for adult learners, we need to think outside of our traditional classrooms. Adult learners may have years of learning through work, life and military experience. Finding ways to engage with adult learners is key and shows the adult learner that their knowledge and skills are valued by VWCC. Remember, not all learning will be equivalent to college-level learning; but keeping an open mind, knowing the right questions to ask and the resources we have available will make the path easier to navigate to determine equivalency. Here are some key points to remember about CPL.
- Knowledgeable faculty and staff are vital in assisting students through the CPL process
- CPL validates the student’s learning outside of the normal classroom
- Students using CPL have better outcomes than students not using CPL
- CPL improves the student’s employability, job mobility, social inclusion and self-esteem
- College enrollment, retention and graduation rates are improved through CPL for the college
As VWCC continues to strive to model a more adult learner-focused community college, we are focused on building a strong, effective and consistent Credit for Prior Learning Program that will support adult learners. Each of us at VWCC can make a difference in the life of an adult learner. For more information on Credit for Prior Learning, contact Cathy Ferguson, CPL Specialist at ext. 76825.
