Virginia Western is not responsible for visiting children who are left unattended at the college. Accordingly, all parents and accompanying adults should be aware of the following policy:
- Children who are not students at Virginia Western must be under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or sponsor (18 years of age or older). Unattended children are prohibited in all college buildings or on the grounds. This does not include children enrolled in any Virginia Western programs, including non-credit.
- If a child is left unattended, the campus police will attempt to locate the parent, guardian, or sponsor of the child and, upon doing so, advise the adult of the college’s policy relating to unattended children on campus. If the parent, guardian, or sponsor of the child cannot be located, campus police will escort the child to the Campus Police Office and continue the effort to locate the parent or guardian. If deemed appropriate, campus police will notify the Virginia Department of Social Services’ Child Protective Services unit.
- Children are permitted to accompany parents or guardians to classes only in emergency situations and only then with the permission of the instructor. To ensure their safety and security, children are not allowed in college laboratories or the Testing Center under any circumstances. This does not include children enrolled in any Virginia Western programs, including non-credit.
