The Vice President of Institutional Advancement is a highly visible senior leadership role, focusing on enhancing the college’s positive involvement in the service area, resulting in expanded opportunities for faculty, staff and students to increase external visibility, relationships and activities. As an office, Institutional Advancement serves the college by promoting understanding of its people, programs, policies and needs, resulting in securing adequate public and private support essential to the fulfillment of its mission. Core leadership responsibilities include support of initiatives developed in collaboration with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) or at the college level, strengthening the college’s role with various private and public entities, and building regional and national relationships with associations, other institutions, and systems. The Vice President provides strategic and operational oversight to the Office of Institutional Advancement, comprised of Marketing & Strategic Communications, the Virginia Western Educational Foundation, and Grants Development & Special Projects.
Work Tasks & Duties
30% | Strategic Planning and Support Serves as a member of the President’s Executive Team and collaborates with other members in the assessment, development, and implementation of institutional initiatives, policies, and procedures. Advises the President and Executive Team on Institutional Advancement matters. Coordinates, plans and facilitates Executive Team operational and planning meetings. Confers with the President, executive staff, the Local Advisory Board, and the Educational Foundation Board to determine the strategic, capital, and annual needs of the institution. Through partnering with the President, and cross-college collaboration, facilitates to actively drive the strategic plan forward in alignment with system and state initiatives. Participates in the development and implementation of strategic long-term plans. Represents the President with various constituencies. Counsels and advises the President on day-to-day operations, conveying an atmosphere of excellence and distinction in support of the College’s mission, vision, core values, and goals. Works to advance a wide range of initiatives, programs projects for the President in support of Institutional Priorities and College functions. Serves as the College point of contact in the absence of the President. Develops and sustains positive working relationships with local, state, federal government elected officials, administrators, and agency contacts. Communicates with local and state elected officials about the college, local and state services and programs, and recommendations for how the College can support and benefit from these programs. Serves as a member of College Council and is an active participant in the college governance process. |
15% | Marketing & Strategic Communications Provides strategic direction, leadership, and oversight for an integrated, comprehensive and cohesive approach to marketing, advertising, interactive media, brand strategy, public relations planning, and associated products. Ensures and demonstrates that the mission and vision of the college are appropriately represented and all strategies are designed to positively impact enrollment, strengthen community outreach, and to raise financial and community support and advocacy for the college. Collaborates with college senior leadership to ensure that all marketing and communications efforts are relevant, timely, and aligned with the strategic initiatives of the college and represented departments. Partners and communicates with the VCCS Office of Governmental Affairs and the Office of Public Affairs on legislative matters and general public relations plans. |
15% | Grant Development & Special Projects Provides strategic direction and support to the Grants Office to ensure that opportunities are assessed and applied for within the overall strategic plan and focus of the college. In collaboration with grants staff, directs the college’s Pursuit of Grants plan to expand financial resources and program delivery, as well as identifying the priorities for funding. Prepares, reviews and/or submits public and private grant proposals. Oversees the administration and compliance of grant awards. Within the college and surrounding community, works to heighten awareness of the benefits of grants, and their positive impact to the college and student success. In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, coordinates and facilitates the IRB process. Works on strategic special projects as assigned by the president. |
20% | Educational Foundation Provides strategic and operational oversight to the development and fundraising programs navigated through the VWCC Educational Foundation, a private IRS 501c3 organization. Reports to the Foundation Board on all Foundation matters. Works closely with the Educational Foundation Board and office staff to ensure that the priorities of the Foundation align with the strategic and operational needs of the college community, with an emphasis on student retention and success. Within the community, enhances awareness of the college so that the service area views the college as a viable source of investment and support. Stewards the efforts of the Foundation staff in fundraising, planned gifts, alumni relations, and other associated resource-generation activities. |
20% | Operational Responsibilities Develops and implements a comprehensive Institutional Advancement plan. Both directly and indirectly, supervises all Institutional Advancement staff, to include all associated management responsibilities. Ensures continuous oversight of Institutional Advancement finances, to include all applicable departmental budgets, grants, and investments. Develops an annual report of activities for distribution to board members, donors, college officials, and other interested parties. Represents Institutional Advancement at Local Board and Foundation Board meetings, to include summary of activities, key accomplishments, challenges, and upcoming focuses. Manages budgets, restricted and unrestricted accounts, and record-keeping systems of the investment portfolio. Collaborates with Financial Services/Accounting with regard to accounts, resources, investments and financial statements. Responds to audit findings regarding development activities in conjunction with the college’s investment account, as necessary. Responds to grant compliance audit findings in collaboration with Financial Services. Serves as a Board of Trustees member of the Lewis Gale Medical Center, Secretary and board member of the Blue Ridge Health Sciences Partnership Careers, and Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board. Represents the College at community events. Performs other duties as assigned by the College President. |
