Program Specifics
- The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS), formerly the General Education Certificate, is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year public college or university in Virginia.
- When completed, the UCGS will satisfy lower-division general education requirements at all four-year public colleges and universities in Virginia.
- Courses in this Academy may satisfy many home school or public school requirements needed for high school graduation.
- The program can be completed through on-line classes; on campus; or a combination of on-line and on-campus.
- The program offers great flexibility to meet the needs of the students
- This is a two year program. Current high school aged 10th & 11th graders are encouraged to apply
Benefits to Students

Admission Requirements
- Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to the college
- Students must complete the Academy Application and submit all supporting documentation noted in the application.
- Students must meet the program admission requirements
- Students must have completed at least 1 full year of high school credits (5); have a current high school GPA of 3.0 or higher; have completed Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry with grades of “C” (2.0) or higher.
Curriculum
Students may select from a wide choice of classes and should refer to the on-line VWCC Course Catalog linked here.
A sample curriculum is posted below, but can be tailored to meet the needs and interests of the student based on the courses listed in the required blocks for the UCGS.
- SDV 101*: Orientation to Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Transfer (2 CR)
- ENG 111 and 112: College Composition I and II (6 CR)
- ENG 245: British Literature (3 CR) – or ENG 246 American Literature (3 CR)
- REL 230: Religions of the World (3 CR), MUS 121: Music in Society, or another approved arts or humanities course.
- PLS 135: US Government and Politics (3CR)
- BIO 101 General Biology I (4 CR)
- MTH 154, MTH 155, MTH 161, or MTH 167 (3-5 CR)
- HIS 121 or HIS 122: US History (3 CR)
- Another approved course (3 credits)
*Please note: SDV 101 is required in the curriculum but does not transfer and will not fulfill general education transfer course requirements
