Sophomore night ended in nail-biting fashion as both the Women’s and Men’s games finished in last minute thrillers. Women’s Basketball faced Bennett College in a rematch from the fall semester. Despite Freshmen Morgan Hufford and Melanie Mirzayan’s combined 46 points, the Blue Stars lost to the Belles 57-59 after being unable to tie the game with free throws with no time remaining from a Bennett College foul. Sophomore Kamera Hagins finished her Virginia Western career having amassed over 100 points and 200 rebounds with the Blue Stars.
The Men’s Basketball team took on I-81 rival New River Community College that saw a Virginia Western combined season high of 206 points. Blue Star Sophomores shined as Gavin Hollingsworth had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Jaylen Board scored 17 points with 11 assists, and Joseph Wampler scored a team high 24 points. Though down 39-49 at halftime, Virginia Western climbed back to tie the game at 101 with just 2 minutes remaining. New River gained a 103-101 lead with 38 seconds remaining but the Blue Stars could not knock down a 3-pointer to take the lead. The game ended 101-105 for the Knights.
This year, Women’s Basketball improved its winning percentage 12% from the 2012-13 season, and Men’s Basketball improved its Fall semester retention rate by 35% from the 2012-13 season. The Virginia Western Basketball teams wanted to thank their parents, family, and friends for their support this season, and for their continued support of the programs as they transition to NJCAA competition next year.
