Books

Books in Brown Library are arranged in Library of Congress call number order. Each book has a unique call number, making it possible for you to find it on the shelf. Books on medicine are found in the R section. You can go to the shelves and browse or you can locate a specific book by clicking on the Books link from the right sidebar. Most of the books in Brown Library are circulating books and can be found on the top floor.

Reserves

There are several health technology textbooks on reserve at the circulation desk. Also on reserve are nursing dictionaries, diagnosis manuals and test preparation guides. Please click here for a complete list. Search reserve lists by class, subject or teacher.

Books at OVID - links to 15 different online medical reference titles including 2009 Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide, Lippincott's Manual of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests and Lippincott's Professional Guide to Signs and Symptoms.

Gale Virtual Reference Library - electronic reference books including: The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Health, The Gale Encyclopedia of Senior Health, The Gale Encyclopedia of Surgery and Medical Tests, and The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine.

Periodicals

We only have paper subscriptions to five medical journals. Our policy is to keep 10 years of each title. These titles are currently located at the back of the reference section on the main floor.

Databases

In addition to our hard copy sources, we also provide access to periodicals through our electronic databases. Most of these databases are provided by VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia. These databases include references to articles that are full-text, as well as references to abstracts and citations.

Nursing periodicals full-text through VIVA - Choose the category tab and then choose health sciences. Choose the nursing subcategory and click go.
The databases listed below cover topics in nursing and health.

  • EBSCO - This group of databases includes Cinahl and Medline. Articles may be full-text, abstracts, or citations.
  • OVID - Electronic reference books and academic journals covering medicine and science.
  • Wiley InterScience - Full-text journals published by Blackwell. Limit your search to either health sciences or medicine.

  • Nursing World - (American Nurses Association) Find latest headlines in nursing, nursing code of ethics, career center, and information about credentialing. Also find publications such as the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.
  • Open Directory Nursing - This directory of nursing web sites includes links for employment, education, history, humor, organizations, specialties, discussion boards, volunteer opportunities, testing, and more.
  • Virginia Department of Health Professions - Contains information pertaining to the examination, licensing and disciplining of health care practitioners governed by Virginia's 13 health care boards.
