To find periodical articles about exercise science and personal training, click on the Databases link from the right sidebar. Start with the ones listed below.
- EBSCO: Academic Search Complete. This is the place to start for general research. Articles may be full-text, abstracts, or citations.
If you can not find the full-text for an article that interests you, request the article through interlibrary loan. A sample search on the phrase "physical training" yielded 56 articles from academic journals such as the International SportMed Journal, Sports Medicine, and the Journal of Motor Behavior. In addition, the sample search provided 76 articles from magazines such as American Fitness, Men's Health, and Coach & Athletic Director.
- EBSCO: AltHealthWatch - This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic, and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers full text articles for more than 180 journals and reports. A sample search on the phrase "physical training" provided 23 articles from journals such as Harvard Women's Health Watch, Alive: Canadian Journal of Health and Nutrition, and the Journal of Biomedical Therapy. In addition, the sample search provided 42 articles from magazines such as Prevention, Health and Yoga Journal.
- EBSCO: Health Source - Consumer Edition - This database provides information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health, with access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines. A sample search on the phrase "physical training" yielded 175 results from titles including: Joe Weider's Muscle & Fitness, Runner's World, Flex, Shape, and Runner & FitNews.
Many additional databases are available and should be evaluated for relevancy based upon your topic of interest.
- Fitness.gov - This web site is produced and maintained by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. PCPFS provides numerous publications and research digests, as well as links to related information available from federal agencies and health and fitness organizations. Use the site's search capability to find information on your topic of interest.
- MedlinePlus - MedlinePlus is an excellent source of consumer health information provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. Features include information on 750 topics covering conditions, diseases, and wellness. The site is updated daily, so it contains the most current information available on health-related topics of interest to consumers and health professionals. Information can be accessed through the search function, tabs, and an excellent site map. The site contains extensive links to other web sites that contain reliable, related information.
- Nutrition.gov - This web site is maintained by agencies within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with input from nutrition experts from the Department of Health and Human Services. The site has search capability and over 1000 links to nutrition information from reliable sources, and you can browse by subject, choosing from a subject list provided under the search box. You can subscribe to the Nutrition.govRSS News Feed to receive the most up-to-date information available.
- Pubmed - PubMed is a bibliographic database that is a service of the U. S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. It contains citations to medical and health-related articles from the 1950's forward. It is a good source for scholarly articles on exercise science and sports medicine and nutrition. Use the “Link Out” feature to access full-text articles. Some of the articles are free and others must be purchased. Try using the library's interlibrary loan service to obtain an article before paying the fee. The “Link Out” feature also provides links to related Medline Plus consumer health information.
- Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutritionists (JISSN) - JISSN is an online, peer-reviewed journal that provides full-text, open-access articles on sports nutrition and associated subjects. Each article has links to citations for related articles in other journals to assist the user in finding additional information on the topic. If you find a citation for an article that is not available at Virginia Western, you may be able to obtain the article through interlibrary loan.
- AMAA Journal (American Medical Athletic Association) - AMAA is the professional division of the American Running Association. This is a peer-reviewed journal and is targeted at sports medicine professionals; however, many of the articles may contain information of value to you. The journal is provided through The Free Library, http://www.thefreelibrary.com/.
Associations and Professional Organizations
- Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) - AFAA offers numerous certifications, courses, and workshops for fitness professionals in the U. S. and internationally. It is affiliated with the National Board of Fitness Examiners, and AFAA certifications are widely recognized within the fitness industry. The web site provides information about the certifications available, training, and continuing education. Your instructors will use some of AFAA's teaching materials in your courses.
- American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) – Public Resources - ACSM is a professional organization whose membership includes physicians, allied health professionals, scientists, and students who work, conduct research, and study in the fields of sports medicine and exercise science. The Public Resources portion of the ACSM web site includes links to brochures, fact sheets, ACSM position stands, an online newsletter, and a resource guide for finding undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, you can register to receive health and fitness information emails.
- American Council on Exercise (ACE) - ACE is a nonprofit organization that provides fitness certifications, education, and training. Three of its certifications, including the Personal Trainer certification, are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The web site provides access to fitness and health information, sample workout routines, and a free newsletter. Students who complete Virginia Western's Exercise Science and Personal Training program are eligible to sit for ACE's national Personal Trainer certification exam.
- American Dietetic Association - Eat Right - Eat Right is the official web site of the American Dietetic Association, whose membership is composed of food and nutrition professionals, including sports nutritionists. The web site has search capability, and the home page provides a link to “Food & Nutrition Information.”
- American Heart Association -
The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."
The association's impact goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010. Progress toward the goal will be measured according to these indicators:
- Reduce the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke by 25 percent.
- Reduce the prevalence of smoking, high blood cholesterol and physical inactivity by 25 percent.
- Reduce the rate of uncontrolled high blood pressure by 25 percent.
- Eliminate the growth of obesity and diabetes.
- International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) - IAYT is a nonprofit professional organization for yoga teachers and yoga therapists. While many of the resources on the web site are only available to members, you will be able to access some articles and yoga and health bibliographies on a variety of topics related to your studies. If you find a citation for an article or book that is not available at Virginia Western, you may be able to obtain the resource through interlibrary loan.
- National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) - NSCA is a non-profit educational organization composed of strength and conditioning professionals and students. The web site provides numerous free educational resources for the public, including training videos and online access to three publications.
