Borrowing Library Materials

VWCC Borrowers

Current VWCC students, faculty, and staff are automatically registered with the library. Your VWCC ID serves as your library card. Please bring your VWCC ID or other photo identification to borrow library materials. VWCC borrowers are limited to fifteen items in circulation at any given time.

Community Borrowers

Community members must obtain a library card to check out or renew items from Brown Library. The community member must

  • Reside within Virginia Western's service region (Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, southern Botetourt County, and northern Franklin County).
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Present proper identification (a current photo ID such as a valid Virginia driver's license or Virginia-issued ID)

Community borrowers are limited to four items in circulation at any given time. A fee of $5 will be charged to replace lost cards. Please note that Roanoke Valley Public Library cards cannot be used to check out items at Virginia Western.

Any borrower who has books that are one month or more overdue will be unable to check out additional books.

Loan Period

For most items, the loan period is 28 days.

Renewals may be requested in person or by telephone on or prior to the item’s due date. Items may only be renewed once. Overdue items or items on hold for another borrower will not be renewed. Renewals for Interlibrary Loan materials are determined by the lending library.

Borrowers' Responsibility Statement

Our goal is to encourage the timely return of library materials and provide for optimal sharing of the collection.

Borrowers are responsible for all library materials checked out to them until the materials are returned to the library. Borrowers are responsible for returning or renewing items by the due date.  All borrowers are responsible for having a current home/mailing address on file with the library. Overdue notices are a courtesy; failure to receive an overdue notice does not relieve the borrower of responsibility to return or renew borrowed materials by the due date.

Borrowers who abuse library borrowing privileges may have their privileges suspended.  Examples of abuse of library borrowing privileges include repeatedly not returning materials on time, failing to pay replacement bills for materials not returned, not responding to overdue notices, not returning library materials when you still have them even after replacement bills have been issued, and mutilation or damage of library materials.

Student, Community Patron, and Faculty/Staff circulation privileges will be blocked until overdue items have been returned or replacement bills paid.

Replacement costs are determined by library personnel at the time of the second overdue notice. Please be aware that out-of-print materials are often costly or difficult to replace. Other fees may be applicable, such as processing or photobinding fees. The replacement fee for laptops is $500. Replacement or damage fees for Interlibrary Loan materials are determined by the lending library.

Non-circulating Items

Some library materials may only be used within the library; this allows equal access to all patrons. Non-circulating items include periodicals, many reserve materials, and laptops. Laptops and non-circulating reserve materials may be checked-out using your VWCC ID or a photo ID and used within the library for a 2-hour period.
