Borrowing Library Materials

VWCC Borrowers - All VWCC students and staff are automatically loaded into the library's patron database, and their patron records can be called up by EMPL ID or by name. For that reason, library cards are not issued. Instead, any proper form of identification (a current photo ID such as a current VWCC student or employee ID, or a valid driver's license) can be used to check out books. VWCC borrowers are limited to fifteen items in circulation at any given time.

Community Borrowers - Community members must obtain a library card to check out or renew items from Brown Library. The community member must

  • Reside within Virginia Western's service region (Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, southern Botetourt County, and northern Franklin County).
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Present proper identification (a current photo ID such as a valid Virginia driver's license or Virginia-issued ID)

Community borrowers are limited to four items in circulation at any given time. A fee of $5 will be charged to replace lost cards. Please note that Roanoke Valley Public Library cards cannot be used to check out items at Virginia Western.

Any borrower who has books that are one month or more overdue will be unable to check out additional books.

Borrowers' Responsibility Statement

Our goal is to encourage the timely return of library materials and provide for optimal sharing of the collection.

Borrowers are responsible for all library materials checked out to them until the materials are returned to the library. Borrowers are responsible for returning or renewing items by the due date.  All borrowers are responsible for having a current home/mailing address on file with the library. Overdue notices are a courtesy; failure to receive an overdue notice does not relieve the borrower of responsibility to return or renew borrowed materials by the due date.

Borrowers who abuse library borrowing privileges may have their privileges suspended.  Examples of abuse of library borrowing privileges include repeatedly not returning materials on time, failing to pay replacement bills for materials not returned, not responding to overdue notices, not returning library materials when you still have them even after replacement bills have been issued, and mutilation or damage of library materials.

Student, Community Patron, and Faculty/Staff circulation privileges will be blocked until overdue items have been returned or replacement bills paid.

Loan Period

For most items, the loan period is 28 days.

Renewals can be made in person or by telephone on or prior to the due date.

Items on hold for another borrower will not be renewed.

Overdue items cannot be renewed.

Books may only be renewed once.

Non-circulating Items

In order to allow all patrons equal access to them, periodicals and most of the reserve books may only be used in the library. Some materials placed on reserve by instructors will have short loan periods.
