Brown Library

Conduct Guidelines

Brown Library provides a learning environment that is conducive to research and study. Library users must conduct themselves in a manner that preserves the rights of others, maintains the effective operations of the library, and protects library materials and property.

While using the resources and services on the top floor of the library, please refrain from the following:

  • Viewing inappropriate material on the computers
  • Making loud, unreasonable, and/or disturbing noises created by persons, electronic devices, or cell phones
  • Consuming beverages in open containers
  • Consuming food
  • Leaving a child unattended by a responsible party
  • Bringing animals into the library (other than service animals)
  • Behaving in a manner that is disruptive to library use

Brown Library enforces Virginia Western's Smoking Policy as found in the "College Policies & Procedures" section of the VWCC Student Handbook. This policy states that smoking is prohibited within all buildings owned or leased by the college. In order to protect and preserve the library's collections, computers, and study areas, the library applies the College's smoke-free environment/no smoking policy to all forms of smoking and tobacco use, including electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco.

The library is an academic space, comparable in many ways to the academic classroom. Patron behavior must not distract, intimidate, or offend others. Library staff members will courteously enforce all conduct guidelines. Failure to comply with a library employee appropriately acting in the performance of his or her duties is a College conduct violation that is subject to discontinued library privileges and/or disciplinary action.

Policy Regarding Children in the Library

Brown Library is an academic library intended for college students. Children are not allowed to be in the library unattended. In the case of an unattended child, the Campus Police Office will be notified. Children entering the library should be supervised by an adult at all times. The parent or guardian of a child who disrupts the library environment will be asked to leave the library with the child.

VWCC Policy Regarding Children on Campus

The college is not responsible for visiting children who are left unattended. Accordingly, all parents and accompanying adults should be aware of the following policy:

Children who are not students at Virginia Western must be under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or sponsor (18 years of age or older). Unattended children are prohibited in all college buildings or on the grounds.
If a child is left unattended, the campus police will attempt to locate the parent, guardian or sponsor of the child and, upon doing so, advise the adult of the college's policy related to unattended children on campus. If the parent, guardian or sponsor cannot be located, Campus Police will escort the child to the Campus Police Office and, if deemed appropriate, will notify the Roanoke Youth Bureau.
Children are permitted to accompany parents or guardians to classes only in emergency situations and only then with the permission of the instructor. To ensure their safety and security, children are not allowed in college laboratories or the Learning Technology Center under any circumstances.
