Security Awareness and FERPA Education

October is Cyber Security Awareness month and Virginia Western is excited to announce that our new Cyber Security Awareness Education program will be rolled out this month to counter the increasing threats to our institution and its faculty, staff, and students.

This year's program will feature continuous education designed to help users identify and avoid threats like phishing, ransomware, and other attacks that lead to identity theft, compromised accounts, and loss of privileged information. The awareness program will also employ a Phishing Tool that will send users very realistic (but harmless) social engineering emails to gauge how well they have absorbed the educational content.

We hope that this comprehensive synthesis of training and assessment will further minimize the chances of future VCCS security breaches.

As you may be aware, Virginia Western has partnered with VCCS Information Security Shared Services (ISSS) to provide a consistent security management and reporting framework at the college.  ISSS staff will be administering the Security Awareness Program at Virginia Western and will be sending out announcements with more information as we gear up for the launch of the product. You will soon receive a preliminary email similar to the one below.  These emails are legitimate and are not phishing emails! The initial message will be like this:

Dear {{First Name}},

Security Awareness Education (SAE) is critical to helping us protect our students, employees, and our organization and is also very important in your personal life to protect you from identity theft, loss of assets, and protect your credit.

You will be getting an email in the next day or two regarding our new SAE program.  The program is being administered by the VCCS Information Security Shared Services Team and is hosted by Global Learning Systems (GLS) so be on the lookout for an email from

The email will include a link to access the education, and a secure 1-time-use link to set your password.

The password link expires in 3 days, so please log in and select your password right away when you receive the email.

The link will be in this format where the Xs are unique to each user.
