Storm Water Management

Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination

VWCC has current plans detailing the outfalls and structural components. The map (PDF) identifies all outfalls.

An assessment of VWCC stormwater structures will be preformed to determine the presence of illicit discharges and illegal dumping using VADCR guidelines. Inspections will be preformed on an annual basis.

VWCC will develop procedures and policies to detect and address illicit discharges and illegal dumping.

Below are some examples of illicit discharges. Click on the photos to see them larger.

Construction Site Runoff Control

Construction site runoff control is the key to preventing sediment from earth-disturbing operations, as well as construction debris, from contaminating the streams. VWCC is developing an erosion and sediment control-training program based on VADCR's erosion sediment manual. Selected staff and faculty will be trained to recognize possible noncompliance scenarios.

VWCC relay upon qualified engineering firms to develop, erosion and sediment control plans. These qualified consulting firms that have been approved by the Virginia Community College System are contracted to develop the plans and acquire permits.

Post Construction Runoff Control

VWCC has worked with Roanoke County to develop and include a portion of campus in the Roanoke Valley Greenways program. Included in the Greenway plan are several trails throughout the parcel of reforested land. VWCC is assisting the county in the development of additional Greenway routes within the campus property. More detailed information can be acquired from Roanoke County.

Virginia Western Community College will discuss the options for installation of porous pavement in selected locations on campus.

Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping

Virginia Western Community College has a limited volume of chemicals present on campus. All vehicle maintenance is preformed off-site. VWCC will be developing specific procedures to respond to a small volume of chemical spills.

VWCC is working with Clean Valley Council and local authorities to provide support for the Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days. VWCC will solicit assistance from students and faculty to participate in scheduled events and will post information on the website about future events.

VWCC performs street sweeping on a regular schedule. Street sweeping will be preformed indefinitely to maintain a clean and safe campus environment. By removing debris on a regular basis VWCC has been able to minimize a need to clean structural BMP's on campus.
