Rewards & Recognition
Regular Full-Time Teaching Faculty Rewards & Recognition Programs
Rewards and recognition is a component of the Faculty Evaluation Plan and is designed to recognize exemplary achievement by regular full-time teaching faculty through the following recognition awards:
Annual Teaching Faculty Rewards
Teaching Excellence Award
This award rewards regular full time teaching faculty who have excelled in one or more of the four teaching domains in the previous academic year. During the nomination period, fellow faculty members, supervisors, or the nominee himself or herself will make the nomination. To accept the nomination, faculty will complete the VWCC Teaching Excellence Award Application, offering some specific details about the area of excellence that is deserving of meritorious recognition. The recipient(s) of the reward will receive an honorarium of at least $500 and a trophy.

J. Andrew Archer Teaching Award
Teaching at Virginia Western provides us with the opportunity to interact with many selfless and talented people whose principles and work we admire and respect. Unfortunately, we sometimes become so immersed in our daily responsibilities that we fail to take the time to show our colleagues just how much we appreciate the work they do and the contributions they make. To address this concern, the college initiated in 1998 an annual peer-to-peer recognition and appreciation program that provides faculty and administrators the opportunity to identify colleagues within their divisions whose contributions and service deserve special recognition and commendation. Faculty may nominate a colleague within any academic school. Four awards will be given annually to one regular full-time teaching faculty from each academic school, with the recipients receiving an honorarium of $500 and a plaque.
Master Faculty Advisor Award
This award reflects the importance that VWCC places on academic advisement and the instrumental role that regular full-time teaching faculty advisors play in assisting students to take responsibility for their educational success. During the nomination period, students, classified staff, fellow faculty members, supervisors, or the nominee himself or herself can submit a Master Faculty Advisor Nomination form to the respective Academic Dean. The recipient of this award will attend the NACADA annual conference or another relevant advising conference or choose to receive a monetary reward of $500.

Learning Environment Awards
The Learning Environment Awards Program is a yearly recognition for a one-time extraordinary and exemplary contribution or act supporting the learning environment by regular full-time teaching faculty in one or more of the following areas: Teaching, Scholarly and Creative Engagement, Institutional Responsibility, and Service. In order to acknowledge such behaviors and contributions by full-time teaching faculty, the Learning Environment Awards Program provides continuous opportunities for fellow faculty members, administrators, staff, students, and members of the community to identify full-time teaching faculty who should be considered for this award. Recipients may choose their recognition from a variety of de minimus awards such as a set of movie passes, special parking, VWCC logo item; or you may choose a $50 donation in honor of your name to the college student book fund, emergency fund, student scholarship fund, or other Foundation employee giving funds. Examples of an appropriate nomination might include exemplary performance organizing a successful campus event or going above and beyond expectations in one single action assisting a student.
Those who wish to recommend a faculty member for a Learning Environment Award may do so at any time during the year by submitting a completed Learning Environment Award Form to the Human Resources Representative of the Faculty Reward and Recognition Committee.

The Rewards and Recognition Committee is comprised of six teaching faculty who were past recipients of the J. Andrew Archer Award, the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, a HR Representative, a CFAC representative serving as the ex-officio, and the Student Activities Coordinator.
The Regular Full-Time Teaching Faculty Rewards and Recognition policy is located in the Faculty Evaluation and Development Plan located in the Virginia Western Faculty Handbook.
Faculty & Classified Staff Rewards & Recognition Programs
The community recognizes VWCC’s loyal, efficient and friendly employees who provide valuable services to our students, customers and citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are extremely proud of our reputation, especially the talents and contributions of our dedicated, hard-working employees who provide these services.
Every employee is valuable and plays a very important role in helping to fulfill our mission. We fully support and encourage methods - both formal and informal - to recognize, praise and reward our employees for outstanding contributions, exemplary performance, and continuous service.
Our goal is to acknowledge and recognize our employees and to encourage excellence in service to the College and the citizens we serve. Thus we have a variety of both formal and informal recognition programs, with specialized events scheduled throughout the year.
Annual Faculty & Classified Staff Rewards
Length of Service Awards
The Length of Service Award recognition program celebrates and honors employees for their length of service. This program is for all full time and certain part-time faculty and classified staff with five or more years of service, at five-year milestones. Employees are honored at the annual Employee Awards Ceremony.
Outstanding Classified Staff Achievement Awards
The Outstanding Classified Achievement Award recognizes excellence and honors full time classified and certain part-time wage employees for their outstanding dedication, enthusiasm, extraordinary accomplishments and contributions to the mission of the College. Being honored publicly is one of the highest honors the College bestows. During the nomination period, nominations are forwarded to the Human Resources Office and an appointed committee selects the recipient(s) based upon characteristics that exemplify truly extraordinary contributions and outstanding achievements. Recipients receive a trophy, a certificate of appreciation, and a monetary reward. Full-time classified employees and part-time employees (identified with a role code other than in the 8000 series), not on probation, having no active written notices, and with at least one year of service are eligible for this reward. Employees may receive the award only once in a two-year period.
J. Andrew Archer Award for Administrative/Professional Leadership
The J. Andrew Archer Award for Administrative/Professional Leadership is a peer-to-peer award. Members of the Administrative Senate are eligible recipients. The award includes $500 and a trophy for excellent administrative leadership. Those eligible to receive this award shall have at least one year of VWCC administrative/professional service as of the date of the award and have not received the award in the prior four years.

You Make the Difference
The You Make the Difference program is designed to acknowledge and demonstrate immediate and spontaneous appreciation from peers and supervisors for the outstanding contribution of any employee. All employees are invited to attend this yearly event. Those employees who have received "You Make the Difference" cards throughout the previous year are eligible for recognition award drawings.
Immediate awards are provided to recognize employees for actions that are above and beyond the normal expectation. Immediate awards may include gift cards, monetary awards, certificates, and "You Make the Difference" cards. All full time and certain part time employees are eligible for immediate recognition. Recognition leave is available to full-time classified employees.
Employee Recognition Committee
The Employee Recognition Committee, made up of classified staff and faculty volunteers, plans for a variety of special college-wide events open to all employees to recognize and honor their dedication, hard work and contributions. These events include: You Make the Difference, Public Service Week, Achievement Day, and the Employee Awards Ceremony. The committee is also proud to provide STAR awards every year.
The Employee Recognition Policy for faculty & classified staff is on VW Connect in the Human Resources Policies & Procedures section.
