Student Support Services Counselor & LD Specialist

Position Number: GA164

Reports to: Student Support Services Project Director (GA009)


Provides career, academic, and personal counseling.  Conducts intake interviews with new and prospective students.  Explains Student Support Services program and services and prepares files for review by Director.  Advises students regarding choice of curricula and appropriate classes.  Determines need for placement tests and makes appropriate referral.  Discusses financial aid programs and the application process.  Assists with completion of financial aid application as needed.   Monitors progress of approximately 100 students per semester through mid-semester evaluations and regular advising sessions.  Advises and assists students with curriculum changes, dropping and adding classes, graduation applications, and other academic matters.  Administers and interprets assessment instruments relative to choice of major, career exploration, and study skills.

25% Secures and reviews documentation of disabilities.  Provides screening of students for possible learning disabilities. Determines eligibility for academic accommodations based on Documentation Guidelines.  Explains accommodation process to students.  Promptly processes requests for academic accommodations based on a documented disability.  Facilitates awareness on campus of the challenges confronted by students with physical and psychological disabilities.  Provides in-service training to full-time and part-time faculty regarding their role in the provision of academic accommodations.  Confers with faculty regarding specific student learning needs and accommodations.  Makes appropriate referrals to mental health and vocational rehabilitation agencies.
10% Assists director with grant management and reports as assigned. Advocates for disadvantaged and disabled students. Accompanies students on cultural enrichment trips. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other College offices such as Counseling, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Activities, Learning Technology Lab, and all academic divisions. Serves as member of various College committees relative to the purpose of Student Support Services, ensuring that the interests of SSS participants are represented and their needs served.
5% Maintains accurate and timely case notes and student records.  Provides data needed for completion of required Federal reports to the project Coordinator.   Represents Student Support Services at various campus and community events.  Participates in professional organizations, conferences, and training programs.  Assumes other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the project Coordinator.
