Tech Prep Career Pathways Summer Camp

This FREE two-day camp gives rising 8th grade middle school students the chance to experience hands-on technology and explore a variety of career opportunities in a college setting.

• Students rotate through various sessions, including Robotics, economic success, budgeting and personal finance, career assessment and development activities, and use Global Positioning System (GPS) units for scavenger hunts.
• The 6th Annual Summer Camp is tentatively scheduled for July 7 & 8, 2011!

Consortia schools allocated $1000

Funding was utilized by the local secondary schools for curriculum enhancement, books, software, equipment and/or activities related to career pathways within the grant. Examples are:

• Underwrote the Career Fair @ Central Academy to present career pathways and educational information to middle school students.
• Purchased software and materials related STEM Career Pathways for Burton Center Arts & Technology's Computer Information System classes.
• Sponsorship of CTE In-Service, the Virginia Workplace Readiness Skills Curriculum Development Workshop.
• Underwrote a Salem High School Culinary Arts Field trip to Washington, D.C.

Professional Development Seminars

"Developing Tech Prep Career Pathways" for approximately 25 Roanoke City Public School CTE teachers and 15 VWCC Professors and Administrators.

"Secondary Educators Professional Development Kuder Training" for approximately 25 Roanoke City Public School teachers and guidance counselors.

"Commonwealth Scholars Professional Development Training" for 20 individuals, including business & industry leaders and secondary/post-secondary administrators, faculty & staff.

"ABCs of Tech Prep" to various high school students during Future Business Leaders Association (FBLA) Regional Competition.

State Seminars

"Tech Prep Career Pathways and Career Coaching Programs" at the 2006 Virginia Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Annual Convention.

"The Reality Store: A Reality Check for Students" at the 2010 VCCS Hire Education Conference.

National Seminars

"Tech Prep Career Pathways and Career Coaching Programs" at the 2008 National Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Conference in Charlotte, NC.
